Prof. Algis Petras Piskarskas Named Postdoctoral Fellowship Competition

The Vilnius University Foundation, together with the VU Faculty of Physics, announces a competition for the Prof. Algis Petras Piskarskas (1942-2022) Named Postdoctoral Fellowship, honoring one of the most renowned scientists in the country, known as the father of Lithuanian lasers.

The purpose of this fellowship is to provide financial support to talented and promising researchers from the VU Faculty of Physics Laser Research Center or other scholars, aiming to encourage them to start or continue their academic work at the VU Faculty of Physics Laser Research Center after defending their doctoral dissertation.

The competition invites all researchers who have defended their doctoral dissertation in the field of laser physics no earlier than 2.5 years ago, who are currently working or are about to start working at the VU Faculty of Physics Laser Research Center, and who are actively participating in or aiming to engage in the scientific activities conducted by the VU Faculty of Physics.

In the 2024 competition, one talented recipient will be selected to receive the Prof. A. P. Piskarskas Named Postdoctoral Fellowship, valued at €20,000 over two years (~€830/month groos pay, ~€700/month net pay).

The Postdoctoral Fellowship is funded from the return on investments of the Prof. A. P. Piskarskas Endowment Subfund, established in 2023, and targeted donations.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDATES

  • The candidate has defended their doctoral dissertation in the field of laser physics no earlier than 2.5 years prior to the announcement of the competition.
  • The candidate aims to start or continue their academic activities at the VU Faculty of Physics Laser Research Center.
  • The candidate commits to offering research topics to students, supervising their work, preparing research projects, delivering lectures, and conducting scientific research during the scholarship payment period.
  • The candidate confirms that they are not employed by laser and/or high-tech companies during the application process and while receiving the scholarship.
  • The candidate provides recommendations from two researchers working at the VU Faculty of Physics Laser Research Center or in the field of laser research.
  • The candidate properly completes the competition application and submits all required documents.


EVALUATION OF CANDIDATES

Applications for the Named Postdoctoral Fellowship are evaluated by a competent committee composed of representatives from the VU Faculty of Physics, the Laser Research Center, and the VU Foundation. The evaluation criteria of the committee are:

  • The relevance, novelty, objectives, and expected results of the candidate’s proposed scientific research topics.
  • The candidate’s experience and achievements in scientific, pedagogical, and engineering activities.
  • The candidate’s motivation to engage in scientific and pedagogical work at the VU Faculty of Physics Laser Research Center.
  • The candidate’s interview (if scheduled) to assess their abilities and discuss their scientific activities.
