RULES FOR AWARDING THE PROF. JONAS KAZLAUSKAS AWARD FOR AN OUTSTANDING WORK BY AN EARLY-CAREER RESEARCHER IN THE FIELD OF PHILOLOGY

CHAPTER I

GENERAL PROVISIONS

1. The Rules for Awarding the Prof. Jonas Kazlauskas Award for an Outstanding Work by an Early-Career Researcher in the Field of Philology (hereinafter referred to as the Rules) regulate the announcement, organization, and evaluation criteria for the competition (hereinafter referred to as the Competition) for awarding the Prof. Jonas Kazlauskas Award for an Outstanding Work by an Early-Career Researcher in the Field of Philology (hereinafter referred to as the Award). The Rules also define the procedure for awarding and disbursing the Award.

2. The Award is funded by the Vilnius University Foundation (hereinafter referred to as the VU Foundation) from the investment returns of the Prof. Jonas Kazlauskas Sub-fund for the Support of Philological Science (hereinafter referred to as the Sub-fund), established in honor of Prof. Jonas Kazlauskas (1930–1970).

3. The Prof. Jonas Kazlauskas Award is a one-time award of no less than €3,500 (three thousand five hundred euros) before taxes. The Award is granted for an outstanding academic work in the field of philology to an early-career researcher at the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University (hereinafter referred to as VU) who has been continuously engaged in research for up to seven years following the defense of their doctoral dissertation.

4. The purpose of the Award is to recognize early-career researchers at the VU Faculty of Philology for their contributions to the development of philological research and to encourage them to continue their academic careers.

5. The decision on the amount and awarding of the Award is made by the CEO of the VU Foundation, taking into account the resolution of the General Meeting of the VU Foundation’s Sharers regarding the utilization of the Sub-fund’s investment returns, as well as the proposal from the VU Faculty of Philology to award the most promising early-career researchers of the faculty.

 

CHAPTER II

ANNOUNCEMENT AND EXECUTION OF THE COMPETITION

6. Information about the competition and other relevant details regarding the award are published on the VU Foundation’s website at www.vuf.lt. This information may also be made available on the Vilnius University website at www.vu.lt and the VU Faculty of Philology website at www.flf.vu.lt.

7. The competition evaluates outstanding philology research works submitted by candidates that were published in the previous calendar year. Eligible works include monographs, studies, articles or collections of articles, and scholarly editions of primary sources.

8. The eligibility period for a candidate’s research publications may be extended by 18 months per child (in cases of maternity leave, childbirth, or parental leave) upon submission of the child’s birth certificate(s). Alternatively, the extension may correspond to the actual leave period upon submission of relevant official documentation confirming the duration of maternity, paternity, or parental leave.

9.  The VU Foundation announces the competition for the award in March of the current year, specifying the deadline for document submission.

10. The following documents must be submitted electronically for the competition:

10.1. A list of the candidate’s research work(s) for which they are being nominated, along with electronic copies of the publications;

10.2. A description of the candidate’s scientific activities;

10.3. Other documents deemed relevant by the candidate, such as evidence of scientific achievements, proof of eligibility period extension, or any supporting materials related to the submitted work.

11. Candidates may be nominated for the competition by departments or centers of the VU Faculty of Philology (in such cases, an extract from the department or center meeting minutes must be provided). Alternatively, a VU Faculty of Philology staff member may submit their own candidacy.

12. Submitted research works may be published in Lithuanian, English, or other foreign languages. If the work is published in a foreign language other than English, the competition participant must provide the title and a summary in Lithuanian.

 

CHAPTER III

EVALUATION OF CANDIDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARD RECIPIENTS

13.  Candidates for the award are evaluated by the Prof. Jonas Kazlauskas Award Committee (hereinafter referred to as the Committee), which is formed by the CEO of the VU Foundation upon proposal and consists of: the Dean of the VU Faculty of Philology or another representative of the VU Faculty of Philology administration authorized by the Dean, two scientists delegated by the Council of the VU Faculty of Philology, Eglė Danielienė (note – E. Danielienė is the daughter of Prof. Jonas Kazlauskas (1930-1970)), and a representative of the VU Foundation. The Chairperson of the Committee is the Dean of the VU Faculty of Philology or another authorized representative of the Faculty’s administration.

14.  The composition of the Committee is confirmed by an order of the CEO of the VU Foundation.

15.  The Committee makes decisions regarding the awarding of the Award by a simple majority vote. If the votes are equally split, the Chairperson’s vote has the deciding weight.

16.  The VU Foundation initiates the formation of the Committee and administrates the Committee’s activities.

17.  Committee members are not compensated separately for their work in the evaluation process.

18.  In evaluating a proposal to award the Award to an early-career researcher for an outstanding philological work(s), the Committee ranks the candidates based on the following criteria:

18.1. The novelty, originality, conceptualization, and fundamental and/or applied value of the candidate’s published scientific works;

18.2. The international level of the candidate’s published scientific works;

18.3. The candidate’s contribution to the development of philological science in Lithuania.

19.  If there are multiple candidates for the award, the Committee proposes the candidate whose scientific achievements are deemed the most significant.

20.  After considering the Committee’s proposal, the CEO of the VU Foundation makes the decision regarding the winner of the competition (hereinafter referred to as the Winner) by May 31 of the current year.

21.  Information about the Winner and the Award they will receive is published on the VU Foundation’s website at www.vuf.lt and the social media accounts managed by the VU Foundation. This information may also be shared on the Vilnius University website at www.vu.lt, the VU Faculty of Philology website at www.flf.vu.lt, and the social media accounts managed by Vilnius University.

22.  The competition is considered invalid if:

22.1. There are no candidates;

22.2. The Committee does not select a Winner from among the candidates.

 

CHAPTER IV

PAYMENT OF THE AWARD

23.  The VU Foundation informs the Winner about the decision to award the Award, offering the Winner to sign a financial support agreement with the VU Foundation, based on which the Award will be paid.

24.  The Award is paid by bank transfer to the Winner’s bank account specified in the financial support agreement within 30 calendar days from the date of signing the financial support agreement.

25.  The VU Foundation accounts for the Award funds (including the payment of income tax to the State Tax Inspectorate of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania) and pays the Award to the Winner.

26.  The personal data of the candidates and winners are processed and stored exclusively for the purposes of organizing the Competition, awarding, paying the Award, and conducting financial accounting for the use of support and investment returns.

 

CHAPTER V

FINAL PROVISIONS

27.  The Rules are approved and amended by the order of the CEO of the VU Foundation and enter into force from the date of approval (amendment) of the Rules or from another date specified in the order.

28.  The Rules are valid until the decision to allocate the Sub-fund’s funds to other activities that align with the objectives of the Sub-fund’s establishment is made.

29.  The Rules are published publicly on the VU Foundation’s website at www.vuf.lt.
