In memoriam: Dr. Algirdas Juozapavičius (1948–2025)

The Vilnius University community has lost an eminent philanthropist, Doctor of Physical Sciences, and one of the pioneers of Lithuania’s laser industry, Dr. Algirdas Juozapavičius (1948–2025).

Dr. A. Juozapavičius – one of the founders of UAB Light Conversion and its longstanding head – consistently built and strengthened Lithuania’s laser industry from 1994 onward. Having worked for many years in scientific research at the VU Faculty of Physics, he made significant contributions to scientific progress and the development of laser physics technologies, leaving a remarkable legacy within the University and the entire national scientific community.

Dr. A. Juozapavičius was also an exceptional Lithuanian philanthropist. The Juozapavičius family donated more than 1.4 million euros to the Vilnius University Foundation: to the Mantvydas Juozapavičius sub-fund, the Prof. Algis Petras Piskarskas sub-fund, the VU Life Sciences Center sub-fund, and to strengthen other activities of the Foundation.

His merits were recognized nationally. In 2018, Dr. A. Juozapavičius was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order “For Merits to Lithuania” for his contribution to the country’s industrial development and for promoting Lithuania’s name worldwide, and in 2019, the City of Vilnius honored him with the St. Christopher statuette for his significant work in science and business.

We express our sincere condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Algirdas Juozapavičius.
