MATHEMATICS AT VILNIUS UNIVERSITY FOR ALMOST 450 YEARS!
Following the example of the College in Rome, the Vilnius Jesuit College was founded in 1570, and mathematics began to be taught. In 1574, a department of mathematics was established. At Vilnius University, founded in 1579, the teaching of mathematics started only in 1585 as part of physics. Mathematics was also needed for the natural sciences and various practical applications. In the XX century, the new era of mathematics began at VU: scientific schools appeared, international conferences were organized, and articles and monographs were published.
In 1978, the Faculty of Mathematics appeared at Vilnius University, separating the fields of physics and mathematics.
In 1999, due to the rapid growth of information technologies and the growing number of computer science study programs, the VU Faculty of Mathematics became the VU Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics (VU FMI).
Today, the Faculty connects four institutes: Data Science and Digital Technologies, Informatics, Mathematics, and Applied Mathematics. The Faculty has ten bachelor’s and six master’s degree programs. VU FMI has doctoral programs in computer science, computer engineering, and mathematics.
MISSION AND VISION
The primary mission of the Faculty is to conduct and develop studies of informatics, computer engineering, and mathematics at all levels, foster creative and critical-thinking graduates, and conduct fundamental and applied research and development. The Faculty’s vision is to be an effectively operated and world-renowned centre for informatics, computer engineering, and mathematics studies and research.
ENDOWMENT SUB-FUND
VU Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics Endowment Sub-fund is a sustainable and intelligent finance management model, where the received funds are invested in various asset classes and the return on investment is allocated annually to the needs of the faculty.
VU Foundation’s investment strategy is in line with the best international practice: diversified financial instruments; risk management; investing in a global market. The Sub-fund’s capital is invested together with the main Fund’s capital. An allocation ratio of 2.5% (or individually agreed) is used to calculate the annual payout to VU Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics. The part of the investment gain that exceeds the payout is reinvested.
Because of reinvesting, the value of the Sub-fund will grow exponentially over the years. Check out the simulation below on how the initial capital of EUR 100,000 will grow over the next 100 years and what return it will bring to VU Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics.
ALLOCATING THE RETURN ON INVESTMENT
The Sub-fund’s return on investment will be used for scholarships for the most talented students. We aim to ensure that faculty students can devote all their time and energy to studying and developing practical and scientific skills. The Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics believes that together we can ensure more accessible studies in especially important modern fields. In the future, the return on investments of the Sub-fund will also enable the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics to attract talented young researchers and lecturers.
